Points raised in the discussion

Shivaji university has already made it compulsory to teach C and C++ on the linux platform. As for the rest, the problem is not in introducing a syllabus. The problem is in implementation. Past efforts have failed because of a lack of trained teachers. Those teachers who were trained left and the initiative died down. It is therefore necessary to train teachers on a war footing - and also, more important, do continuous training. Also a special group for foss teachers has to be setup to give realtime support to teachers.

One starting point is to get students to do their projects in foss using the foss methodology. There is no need for syllabus change or directions from the University to do this.

All of them says this is a good thing we have started at our university, and they demand more activities on python, LAMP most of them are project oriented, hence a faculty training is required first so please try to arrange faculty training by some good expert on above topics.

The workshop will be for two days - 10th will focus on Vice Chancellors, Principals, HODs, BOS Members with a view to getting foss syllabi introduced in the universities/colleges of the area. The agenda will be:

10th Morning session

Introductory remarks from the Head of the institution

1 Talk on FOSS in general (NRCFOSS)

2 FOSS in education (Pune LUG)

3 Initiatives taken by NRCFOSS in engineering education (from NRCFOSS)

Afternoon session:

1 Demo of FOSS lab server and FOSS alternatives for software used in engineering education

2 Discussion on how to introduce FOSS in the curricula in the region
